[Webinar] – eXtended Reality in Medicine

RSG-KOREA 2026 2nd Webinar
Tuesday, May 12th, 2026
17:00 – 18:00 (KST)
Topic: eXtended Reality in Medicine
Speaker: Prof. Hyoun-Joong Kong
Abstract
Metaverse is a hypothetical iteration of the Internet as a single, universal, and immersive virtual or mixed world, facilitated by eXtended Reality (XR) technologies such as headsets and smart glasses. Recent interest in the metaverse has been driven by the concept of Web 3.0, a decentralized evolution of the internet.
XR encompasses the full spectrum from the real to the virtual within the reality–virtuality continuum, including augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and mixed reality (MR). These technologies are increasingly being explored in medical fields due to their immersive capabilities.
XR shows strong potential in various applications, including medical education and training, diagnosis and pre-procedural planning, intra-procedural assistance, and digital therapeutics. To effectively implement XR in healthcare, it is essential to understand its underlying technologies, practical use cases, and regulatory considerations such as Software as a Medical Device (SaMD).
In this lecture, Prof. Kong will introduce the concept of XR and discuss its current and future applications in medicine.
