[Webinar] – Human reference microbiome for the era of microbiome medicine

Abstract

Approximately 20 years ago, the unveiling of the human reference genome sequence empowered us to dissect human inheritable traits at the genetic level. This blueprint of the human body marked the advent of the ‘Genome Medicine’ era, wherein this knowledge became pivotal for disease prediction and treatment. Recent studies have increasingly shown that symbiotic microorganisms in our body play significant roles in disease processes. Numerous initiatives are being undertaken to harness these microorganisms for disease prediction and therapy. Yet, attempting to decipher their influence on diseases without genome-resolved information of these microorganisms is akin to the challenges faced when seeking disease-related genes without the foundational map of the Human Genome. To deeply probe the microbiome-disease interactions using today’s genome medicine advancements, it’s imperative to first decode the genomes of these symbiotic microorganisms. Such advancements herald the onset of the ‘Microbiome Medicine’ era, which promises to be a transformative phase in medicine, akin to a second revolution driven by genomic sequence analysis. In this lecture, our objective is to present the Genome-resolved metagenomics technology, a tool designed for decoding the genomes of these symbiotic microorganisms, and to elucidate how this wealth of genomic information can inform and innovate disease treatment methodologies.

About the Speaker

Insuk Lee is an Underwood Distinguished Professor in the Department of Biotechnology at Yonsei University. He earned his B.S. in Biology from Hanyang University and his Ph.D. in Microbiology from the University of Texas at Austin. He subsequently conducted postdoctoral research at the Center for Systems Biology at the same institution.Since joining Yonsei in 2008, Dr. Lee has focused on network biology, cancer systems biology, single-cell omics, computational metagenomics, and the human microbiome. His notable contributions include the development of genome-scale functional networks for 5 animal, 7 plant, and 7 microbial species including humans, as well as network medicine research tools (https://netbiolab.org/w/Software). He also developed TRRUST, one of the most widely used TF-target network databases. His recent publications reflect his expertise in genome-resolved metagenomics and functional analysis of the human microbiome.
